Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher, I believe that every child comes into my classroom with their own viewpoints and perspectives. It is my job to create a classroom that is accessible to them. Since students have different academic strengths and weaknesses, I need to vary my teaching strategies in order to reach them all. I want the talkative student to be able to participate in group discussions and I want the artistic students to be able to draw a visual representation of Freak the Mighty. I believe a classroom based on differentiation and different instructional activities can successfully engage all students in their education.

Every student should have the opportunity to experience the world in his or her classrooms. As an English teacher, this involves presenting literature from different cultures. The gap between societies has been bridged by technology, and it is essential that students learn to interact via it. In my classroom, students explore the world through literature and writing. They learn about new cultures through informational texts and present them via travel journals and PowerPoints. They learn how to read and write Japanese Haiku as well as Shakespearean Sonnets. In my classroom, students learn how to incorporate global ideals and styles into their own writings.

One goal of education is to create better citizens, people who understand their place in the world. As a teacher, I create a classroom that runs on the respect of other students’ beliefs, ideas, and opinions. Students listen to their classmates and learn how to argue in a respectful manner. I believe that teachers are role models for children. We need to be honest, fair, and have high expectations for our students. I achieve this by having high standards for students academically and behaviorally. If I set high but fair standards, I have learned that my students will reach them. I hope that after my classroom, they will learn to set the bar high for their own goals and dreams.

Ideally, I want to help students achieve their individual dreams. I want to help them become the people that they want to be. It is my hope that my passion for education inspires them to become lifelong learners. I want my students to be able to take the skills they learned in my classroom and apply them to the real world. I hope that each student walks away from my classroom with the memories of an educator who cared about him or her as a truly unique and special individual.
